Located in Western China in the Shaanxi Province, Xi’An is a city that all visitors to China need to visit. The city has a rich history. As both the starting point to the Silk Road and one of China’s 4 Ancient Capitals, Xi’An is a very important city in Chinese history and culture. There are many historical sites within and nearby Xi’An that should be visited.

Ancient City Wall

Xi’An has one of the best preserved city walls in China. Originally built in the 14th century, the Xi’An City Wall has been well-upkept with frequent restorations over the years. The wall is constructed in a rectangular shape with a watch tower at each corner. The wall was originally built for defense, but now serves as a main tourist attraction in the city.

The top of the wall is completely walkable, spanning about 8.7 miles in length. A popular activity is to walk along the top of the wall, which can take numerous hours if walking the entire thing. Another option to see the entire wall in less time is to rent a bicycle and bike the entire length of the wall. Along the wall are signs providing history about the wall and city that you can stop at if you please. At dusk, you can rent bikes and ride along the wall as the wall and city lights begin to turn on, making for a beautiful experience.

The Bell Tower

Although many cities in China have a Bell Tower, the Bell Tower in Xi’An is the largest and best kept. Built in the Ming Dynasty of the 14th century, the Xi’An Bell Tower is a must see sight when visiting Xi’An. The tower originally served as time keeping for the city with the bell being beat every day at dawn, but as it’s use was phased out the tower now serves as a historical relic and tourism.

The Drum Tower

Xi’An’s drum tower can be found in the center of the city and is one of the most recognizable symbols of Xi’An. Located within the Drum Tower is a large drum that used to be beat at dusk every day, opposite the morning bell from the Bell Tower. The Drum Tower nowadays primarily serves as a tourist attraction. Inside the tower there is a drum museum showing a variety of different drums from different eras. Visitors can also climb to the top of the tower for stunning views overlooking Xi’An.

The Muslim Quarter

The Muslim Quarter in Xi’An is a neighborhood known for shopping, food, and culture. Historically this neighborhood was founded by primarily Muslim merchants who came to Xi’An via the Silk Road. Throughout the neighborhood are numerous mosques including the large Great Mosque. Now the neighborhood is known for shopping and restaurants. While walking through the area you’ll pass numerous stalls selling local foods and snacks. Some must try foods include Yangrou Paomo (soup) (lamb and bread soup) and Roujiamo (pork buns). This is a great spot to spend a few hours wandering, shopping, and eating.

Great Mosque

The Great Mosque of Xi’An is the largest of the 7 mosques in the city. The Great Mosque is one of China’s largest mosques and is an active site of worship. It’s also a popular tourist attraction. The mosque grounds have a large courtyard and gardens that are a tranquil and peaceful place to spend time walking through. The Great Mosque is unique to see – it’s built in a combination of Chinese and Islamic styles, making it appear much different than the mosques you’re likely to see in Islamic countries.

Army of Terracotta Warriors

Although not actually in Xi’An, the Army of Terracotta Warriors is located just outside the city and a must visit sight when in Xi’An. The army is comprised of over 8,000 terracotta soldiers that were buried with China’s first emperor – Qin Shi Huang. The army was created back in the 200s BCE but weren’t discovered until 1974 by local farmers who were digging in a field. The terracotta army was buried with the emperor for protection and is made up of warriors and horses. It’s interesting to visit to see the pits where the warriors were discovered, and the massive amount of warriors that have been unearthed so far. Rows upon rows of warriors stand in the ground, many in great condition. This is a unique and historically important site to visit while in Xi’An, China.
