On my first trip to the state of New York, I somehow managed to miss the main attraction – New York City – but since I was upstate for work I was able to take a day trip out to Niagara Falls! I spent an afternoon walking around above the falls on the American side of the river (I can’t believe I forgot my passport!), admiring the power of the river and falling water.
I was on a budget while visiting the falls, but I did make the great decision to take a Maid of the Mist boat ride to the base of the falls. Best. Decision. Ever. The view of the falls from above is gorgeous, and I definitely encourage walking around the top of the falls, but taking a boat ride.
After paying $17 dollars for the ride, you’re given a poncho and have to wait in a short line for the next boat to arrive. The boats arrive so frequently it’s a really short wait, which is very nice. After boarding the boat you’re off to see the falls from water level, which provides a fantastic view and gives you a feel for the true force of these falls. Caution – Even with the poncho on, you will still get wet. The mist from the falls is that powerful!
You can see the mist caused by the water falling as you approach the falls. The water in the air is so thick that from a distance most of the falls is hidden from view until you get closer.
But as you get closer, the sight begins to clear and the roar of the falls is upon you. Although the height of the falls isn’t that impressive, the amount of water rushing over the rocks is extremely impressive. Hearing the sound of the roaring water and feel of the mist on your face is a truly remarkable experience.
Can you imagine trying to ride over these waterfalls? I know people have tried, but I sure can’t imagine going over the top!
